Door Cup PPF: Protecting the Paint Behind Your Door Handles

A two-year-old black sedan gets its first full detail. Under the shop lights, the paint looks clean everywhere except the shallow bowls behind each door handle. Those spots are covered in fine, curved scratches from rings, keys and fingernails. Door cup PPF is a small piece of clear film that protects that area from daily contact.

Why Door Cups Get Scratched

Each time someone opens a door, their fingers reach into the recess behind the handle. A ring or a key in the same hand drags across the paint.

After a few thousand openings, the scratches blend into a cloudy patch. It shows most on dark colors and under direct sun.

How Door Cup Film Works

Installers use precut pieces of paint protection film shaped for each make and model. The film is a clear urethane about 8 mils thick. The installer sprays the cup with a slip solution, sets the film in place and squeegees out the water so the adhesive bonds. The film then takes the scratches instead of the paint. Many films, including XPEL’s, have a top coat that lets light marks close up with heat from the sun or warm water.

Benefits

Installed well, the film is close to invisible. Four door cups take far less time than a full panel, so they are often added during another service. Unscratched paint behind the handles also keeps a car looking newer at trade-in.

Prep Matters

Film locks in whatever is under it. If the cups already have scratches, a quick machine polish removes them before the film goes on, so the finished area looks clean.

Pairing With Other Coverage

Door cups are often added to a front-end PPF package. Door edge film, a thin strip along the rear edge of each door, guards against chips from parking lot dings and is often installed in the same visit.

Care

The film can be washed like the rest of the car. Pressure washer nozzles should stay a foot or more from the edges. Picking at an edge can lift the film and let dirt under it.

Drivers in Westford and Greater Boston, Massachusetts can learn about XPEL film options from Wrap and Detail Co, a veteran-owned shop that installs paint protection film, ceramic coatings and wraps.
